Hyderabad: Now, diabetic students can snack in exam

Students can bring sugar tablets, chocolate, candy, fruits (banana, apple, orange), snacks like sandwich and small bottles of water.

Hyderabad: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will allow its students suffering from Type-1 diabetes and appearing for board exams for the Class X and Class XII to carry eatables while coming to examination centres.

Students can bring sugar tablets, chocolate, candy, fruits (banana, apple, orange), snacks like sandwich and small bottles of water. However, the food items will be kept with the invigilator and students have to take them from him as and when they want to eat during the exam.

According to controller of examinations K.K. Choudhary, students with Type 1 diabetes need insulin injections at regular intervals to manage their blood glucose level. These children need frequent meals to avoid hypoglycemia which may otherwise affect their health/performance in the exam.

However, students and parents have to submit a certificate from a diabetes specialist along with full history, nature of the diabetes etc to the principal, who will then forward this to the board.

This decision was welcomed by city schools. Principal Mona Mehdi of Jain International School said this will be big relief to students and their parents.
Dr. K. Srinivas Rao, diabetogist from the city, said cases of teenagers diagnosed with diabetes increased over the last decade. According to studies, four to five teenagers out of 100 are found to have diabetes.
