Thrisuur: Those who haven’t learnt the lessons from the deluge that devastated the state are now clamouring for the construction of a dam across Chalakudy River upstream Athirapally waterfalls, says Kanam Rajendran.
Speaking after receiving Sandra K. Thomas Award from M.P. Veerendra Kumar MP, the CPI state secretary said it needed to be reviewed whether the state’s water management system had flawed.
“It is not possible to build a dam across the Chalakudy river and those campaigning for such a dam are nurturing a dream which would never be a reality,” Mr Rajendran said.
Given the deluge and the landslides, he said, multi-storey buildings should not be allowed on hill slopes.
Soon after the floods in which the entire Chalakudy town got submerged, KSEB chairman N. S. Pillai had made a statement that had the dam was built, Chalakudy could not have flooded.
The greens along with CPI, Congress and IUML are against the dam and CPM is in favour of it.
