Tilt-shift hacks to create a miniature world

Tilt-shift hacks to create a miniature world

Remember your old toys? Cars, planes and trains. Back in our days, we played with them creating our own little story. What if we tell you the same toy stories can be made with photos created using a simple trick called ‘Tilt-shift’ with your camera.

Tilt-shift is a kind of photography trick that manipulates the photo with focus and depth-of-field (DOF) to produce images that have a selective focus, often making the world look like a bunch of miniatures. This effect gives the photo a ‘toy-world’ feel.

The effect can be achieved by using a dedicated tilt-shift lens for your DSLR. However, you can fake the effect using various computer software, or even camera apps on your smartphone.

Tilt-shift tends to work best for photos that are taken from a higher ground. Try taking shots from roof-tops whilst looking down to the ground. The higher you are, the better the effect turn out. Just make sure your subject appears small in the scene and do ensure there is enough light available to take the sharpest shot.

On your smartphone, look for a blur effect filter, usually marked as ‘toy-mode’ or miniature effect, on the camera. You could download a few tilt-shift featuring camera apps too. After you have selected the filter, adjust the exposure to avoid blowing out highlights and or losing details in any shadow area.

If you are taking the photo from within your default camera app, you need to select the plane of focus and depending on the app, adjust the amount of blur you desire for your photo.

We suggest boosting the colours marginally which will help bring the subject to the fore. Other than this, saturation, contrast and vibrancy are other settings that you can experiment with for a pronounced effect.
