The Neverending Story book Google doodle marks 37th anniversary of children’s novel

In case Generation Xers like myself weren’t already knee-deep in 80s nostalgia since binge-watching “Stranger Things,” Google has replaced the logo on its home page today with a doodle marking the 37th anniversary of the publication of Michael Ende’s “The Neverending Story.”

Designed by doodler Sophie Diao, the five images making up the doodle were inspired by artwork from illustrator Roswitha Quadflieg that was part of the original book, first released on this date in 1979.

Every once in a blue moon a book captures the imagination, providing a portal into magical places unknown. So it was with “The Neverending Story,” a children’s fantasy novel by Michael Ende, which topped best-seller lists in the author’s native Germany following its release on September 1st, 1979.

According to Google’s Doodle team, the doodle uses parallax scrolling — a first for a Google doodle — to create its slide show format and includes a sharing icon and search icon that leads to results for “The Neverending Story book.”
