This document describes how to fix the guest support for some Linux distributions, like Fedora 8, in VMware Server 1.04.
This howto is a practical guide without any warranty – it doesn’t cover the theoretical backgrounds. There are many ways to set up such a system – this is the way I chose.
You’ve created a virtual machine with a newer Linux distribution like Fedora 8 and want to start it to begin with the installation – but it hangs at the point where the ata_piix driver is beeing loaded:
Stop the virtual machine and open its .vmx-file.
Add the following line and save the file:
scsi0.virtualDev = “lsilogic”
Now start the virtual machine – you’ll get a notice like this:
Click on “Yes”. Afterwards the virtual machine will run properly.
