VMware Workstation On OpenSuse 10.2


This article describes how to install VMware Workstation on an OpenSuSE 10.2 (i686) system. With VMware Workstation you can create and run guest operating systems (“virtual machines”) such as Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, etc. under a host operating system.

What we need:

  • Vmware Workstation and a serial
  • Kernel scoure code
  • Compiler
  • PuTTY / WinSCP (maybe)
  • OpenSuSE 10.2 (well I take it you got it installed .. I’m not going to tell you how to install that)

Let’s get down to business:

Step 1

Get a copy of VMware workstation ver 5.5 if you don’t have it downloaded from www.vmware.comΒ  homepage or Vmware workstation page. It’s about 110MB.Β  Get the .rpm.

 

Step 2

Make sure we boot our PC into the OpenSuSE 10.2 normal (non-XEN kernel). This should be default boot anyway πŸ™‚ but it’s better to make sure.

Step 3

On the OpenSuSE PC itself:

3.1

Right-click on the desktop then click on the menu list: open terminal.

Type

su – <enter>
password here :

then do 3.2 – yast onwards.

Or

Via PuTTY window (this is how I do things):

Log in as root user and type this:

yast

Then pick from the menu (this may tab 20 secs to load up).

From the Software menu push the tab key or the right arrow key, then pick the Software Management <enter>

Then press ALT + s.

Then type in gcc. From the list thats comes up pick:

gcc ?4.1.3
gcc41 ?4.1.2_20061115

(Push the space bar key.)

Then ALT + S and type in kernel.

kernel-source ?2.6.18.2

Once these three packages are picked, type:

ALT + a

This will bring up a window like this with five packages to be added to the system about (280 MB or so):

Push ALT + o to install them.

It may take 5 mins for this to happen.

Push ALT + N, then ALT + Q.

Step 4

Download the VMware file to the OpenSuSE PC. If it was downloaded to another PC use a tool like WinSCP to copy it over. Or if you got a local web server copy the file over to it and wget address/filename.

In the screen shots you will see both methods.

WinSCP

Log in as root user on the OpenSuSE box, then find your way to the /tmp folder. Then click and drag the file Vmware-workstation-XXXXXXXXXXXX.rpm to the WinSCP window. Let go and click on copy when its comes up. Once done in the PuTTY window or the terminal type in as root user:

cd /tmp

Then go to step 5.

Download With wget (From Local Web Server)

In PuTTY type:

cd /tmp
wget http://pc2.lan:88/linux.appz/Vmware-workstation-5.5.3-34682.i386.rpm

( Note: that’s my privte LAN address to a pc where I keep a lot of my Linux files.)

Replace the info that needs to be replaced with the right info for your setup.

Step5: VMware Install

The easy step: make sure you are in the same folder where you copied the vmware-workstation RPM file to. πŸ™‚

rpm -i Vmware-workstation-5.5.3-34685.i386.rpm

Step 6.2

Type in

Virtual ethernet done
Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 done
Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet1 (background) done
Host-only networking on /dev/vmnet8 (background) done
NAT service on /dev/vmnet8 done

The configuration of VMware Workstation 5.5.3 build-34685 for Linux for this
running kernel completed successfully.

You can now run VMware Workstation by invoking the following command:
“/usr/bin/vmware”.

Step 7: Now The Real Fun Part πŸ™‚ … Let’s Play Ball with VMware πŸ™‚

On the OpenSuSE PC log in (if not already logged in).

Gnome Desktop env: click on the Computer icon OR push the start key, then click on More Applications:

Look for the new application OR type in the filter box β€œvmware” <enter>.

Then right-click on VMware workstation and select Add to Favourites:

To load VMware: click on the start menu, then select VMware workstation from the list. Then you get the EULA to read again. Afterwards you can use VMware.

 

Step 8: Problem And Fix

I found I get a VFS error : invalid parameters error, but I found a way to fix this on the Novell website.

Rename libgcc_s.so.1 in /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libgcc_s.so.1.

Via a terminal window or PuTTY do this as root user:

cd /usr/liv/vmware/lib
mv libgcc_s.so.1 libgcc_s.so.1.old

That’s it. All that it does is rename the file from libgcc_s.so.1 to libgcc_s.so.1.old.

I found the fix on the Novell Coolsolutions web site.
